Effects Of The Energy Crisis On Biofuel Production And Consumption In The European Union

Abstract

The worldwide energy crisis and the necessity to reduce the greenhouse gas emission determined the increased importance of biofuels as alternative energy source. The application of the Biofuels Directive 2003/30 EC has been an impulse to the increase of land area cultivated with energy crops and of the bio-diesel and bio-ethanol production in the European Union. The paper provides an analysis of Romania's possibilities to be in line with the growth tendencies of production and consumption of biofuels and comply with the EU targets while being competitive. It also presents some negative effects of the increase of biomass production with energetic purposes.
