Sub-Saharan Africa’s Eurobonds: Success Story or Subject of Concern?

Abstract

In this short article, we describe how Sub-Saharan countries became more successful during the last decade in tapping the Eurobond markets as an alternative instrument to finance themselves externally. We furtherhighlight what were the main driving factors not only in explaining this success, but also the evolution over time of the secondary-market yields of their bonds. We finally assess to what extent we should be worried about their role in moving again towards unsustainable debt burdens
