Abstract

La stature moyenne des conscrits est considérée comme indice de niveau de vie biologique. L'exploitation de 224 557 dossiers individuels de conscrits nés entre 1780 et 1920 permet de distinguer trois grandes phases dans l'évolution de la stature : stagnation (première moitié du XIX[e] siècle), contrastes régionaux (seconde moitié du XIX[e] siècle) et croissance générale (première moitié du XX[e] siècle). Ces résultats nous amènent à nuancer la vision d'une industrialisation douce à la française.
