Abstract

What are the consequences of cyclical variations in shiftworking? This paper gives a theoretical answer to this question. During Booms, added shifts and increases in working hours rise the workweek of capital. Greater utilization of capital magnifies the response of output to supply shocks as well as to demand shocks: the cyclical volatility of output increases as much as 40%.
