Terror and Terrorism in Haruki Murakami’s IQ84 A Critical Analysis

Abstract

This essay is a reading of Haruki Murakami’s IQ84 (2009). This novel has been compared to George Orwell’s classic novel 1984. This essay will discuss the influence of Orwell on Murakani’s fiction. It will also look at how the idea of terrorism has evolved in Murakami’s fiction since Orwell’s novel. The significance of this project is that it looks at the Japanese psyche and views on terrorism with the use of Western and Indian theories on terrorism. It uses a comparative approach when it aims to look at and discuss IQ84 to Orwell’s 1984, from a Western-Indian point of view. It will compare how the idea of terrorism has evolved in Murakami’s writings since 2001 and 9/11 by aligning recent acts of terrorism and writings on them with those that are portrayed by Murakami in his fiction.
