This paper deals with the commercial navigation in the Upper Paraná basin, within the former southern territory of Mato Grosso State (in present days, Mato Grosso do Sul State), during the XX century’s first half. It focuses especially the region located southwards the Noroeste do Brasil Railway’s track, a region characterized by activities of cattle ranching and erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis) extractivism. The article intends to demonstrate that, due to the inexistence of railways and the impracticability of roads, the fluvial navigation has played in this region, for a while, a relatively important economic role, in articulation with paulistas railways (Sorocabana above all). It has constituted a part of the expansion efforts carried out by São Paulo capitalistic pole, as it made easier the shipments of consumption goods from São Paulo (including industry as well as agriculture products). Besides, it made possible the ervamate exports, via São Paulo or mainly via Lower Paraná River, towards the Argentinian market.
