Abstract

The economy of the New Kingdom of Granada was based almost exclusively on the exploration of alluvial gold. In spite of this situation, the analysis of silver mining allows to perceive more precisely the main subjects which have been occupying colonial historiography, and its results are expected to improve both our knowledge of that period's mining and on the silver animated economy of Nueva Granada. This paper, as part of an ongoing research, deals successively with the spatial location of silver mining, the links between its extraction and monetary circulation, and manpower's role in determining the cycles of their behaviour.
