Evaluation Of Financial Abuse In The Public Sector Of Nigeria: The Case Of Federal Inland Revenue Service

Abstract

There has been an ever-increasing rate of financial abuse in the Nigerian public sector. This study therefore theoretically examined financial abuse in the public sector with a particular reference to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Abuja. The study discussed the historical background of the FIRS as well as identified the major causes of financial abuse in the organization. Furthermore, some of the ways in which financial abuse could be curtailed in the sector were identified and discussed. Also, the study suggested some of the internal control measures to be adopted in order to address financial abuse in the sector. Given the negative impact of financial abuse in the public sector, and in the economy in general, this study concluded that adequate efforts must be made by the government to set up and maintain the right machinery and policies that will address both the causes of financial abuse and the menace of financial abuse itself.
