Europawahlen: Wie hat sich das Vertrauen in die EU über die Zeit verändert?

Abstract

Seit der ersten Direktwahl des Europäischen Parlaments 1979 hat sich die Europäische Union (EU) stark gewandelt. Die Erweiterung von 9 auf 27 Mitgliedstaaten, die Einführung des Schengenraums und die Unterzeichnung des Vertrags von Maastricht waren Meilensteine der europäischen Integration. In der näheren Vergangenheit haben jedoch Krisen, angefangen mit der Finanzkrise 2008 über die Flüchtlingskrise 2015, der Corona-Pandemie 2020 und aktuell dem Krieg in der Ukraine, die öffentliche Wahrnehmung der EU geprägt. Trotz der Krisen ist das Vertrauen in die EU in vielen Mitgliedsländern stabil und liegt häufig noch über dem Vertrauen in die nationalen Regierungen. Auch das Vertrauen in die Demokratie ist hoch und der Wunsch nach „starken“ Anführern gering.
