Abstract

As the current results of the Ifo Investment Survey show, western German manufacturing invested approximately €41 billion in new buildings and equipment in 2003, which is a decline of approximately 3% over the previous year (1% in real terms). Thus the enterprises again revised their investment plans downwards, as already in 2002. Based on present plans in western German manufacturing, investments should increase by 3% in nominal terms (+ 5% in real terms) in 2004. However, one must see this increase in investment against the background of the weak investment activity of recent years. In real terms investments expected for the current year are only slightly above the level of 1988. Including also the investments in eastern German manufacturing, total investments in German manufacturing - based on the Ifo Investment Survey - for new buildings and equipment fell by 3% in nominal terms (1% in real terms in 2003). For 2004, according to present plans in German manufacturing, a total increase of nominal 4% (real +6%) can be expected.
