Abstract

Perche', nelle economie di mercato occidentali, esiste uno spazio socioeconomicamente rilevante che viene occupato dal cosiddetto "settore non profit"? L'obiettivo di questo contributo di riflessione e' quello di illustrare alcune delle principali ragioni argomentative che, adottando come punto di vista l'angolo visuale proprio della teoria economica, possono a nostro avviso essere avanzate al fine di giustificare l'esistenza degli enti non lucrativi all'interno delle maggiori economie "di primo mondo" contemporanee. In particolare, ci soffermeremo inizialmente su alcune delle teorie che ormai e' possibile qualificare come "spiegazioni classiche" dell'esistenza di tale ambito socio-economico, per poi presentare invece alcune argomentazioni imperniate su recenti sviluppi della letteratura economica e sociologica sul tema del capitale sociale (della fiducia in particolare).
