Abstract

Definition and Statistical Monitoring of Environmental Industry Increased Competitiveness for the Environmental Sector. Commissioned by The Finnish National Fund for Research and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Etlatieto Ltd conducted a study to define environmental business activities and develop industry statistics. The project aims to set up a national monitoring system to evaluate the extent of environmental business activities and their international competitiveness. The report presents a system for monitoring environmental business activity. Based on the current definitions of the environmental sector and taking into account the characteristics of Finnish industry, a new classification for environmental business clusters was introduced. A new comprehensive database consisting of 3,500 enterprises was constructed. With the defined business clusters and the company database, a pilot questionnaire survey on the environmental industry was conducted. The survey evaluates the size and growth of companies in the industry. Utilizing the results of the empirical work, the study provides a recommendation on how to maintain and administer the company database. Another part of the environmental business monitoring system is the statistical side, for which a recommendation on its maintenance was also offered in the study.
