La reforma monetaria en Cuba

Abstract

En este documento se analiza la reforma institucional reciente en el ámbito monetario de Cuba que prohíbe la circulación del dólar estadounidense en el territorio nacional y generaliza el uso del peso cubano convertible (CUC);, después de la implementación de otras medidas de desdolarización de la sólo 10 años después con la iniciativa del pago de mayores tasas de interés respecto del dólar a los depósitos a plazo fijo y a término en moneda nacional y en los CUC. El proceso de desdolarización de la economía cubana se inició virtualmente en la misma fecha en que se despenalizó la tenencia de divisas en 1994, cuando comenzó la circulación del peso convertible que alcanzaría plena convertibilidad sólo 10 años después con la iniciativa del pago de mayores tasas de interés respecto del dólar a los depósitos a plazo fijo y a término en moneda nacional y en los CUC. En 2003 se implantó un control de cambios para las empresas cubanas que operan en divisas, y en 2004 se prohibió la circulación del dólar en efectivo y se generalizó el uso del peso convertible en el territorio nacional.En abril de 2005 se apreció el CUC en un 8% con respecto a todas las divisas extranjeras.
