Abstract

We provide an overview of the delegateDelegate allocation process in the Republican Party presidential primaryPrimary. We include a broad outline of the process at the national level and formally define and compare the seven different apportionment methods used at the state level to assign delegates to candidates based on their share of the primaryPrimary vote. These seven methods include Hamilton’s method and six methods that have not been well-studied. We illustrate these methods using data from the 2008–2016 primaries. We also discuss the use of thresholdsThresholds, and the process for assigning delegates to congressional districts.
