East German International Trade during Transition As a Reflection of the Dynamics of Competitiveness

Abstract

How an economy adjusts in the initial stages of transition to an extreme shock of export liberalization can teach important lessons about the dynamic processes that restore international competitiveness in part or in full. This paper analyzes these dynamics of competitiveness using the case of East Germany to test a novel evolutional trade theory in combination with a novel East German data series.
