Die Prägung politischer Einstellungen durch das Fernsehen – Evidenz aus Ostdeutschland

Abstract

In diesem Beitrag werden die Ergebnisse eines Forschungsprojekts dargestellt, in dem der kausale Einfluss von Westfernsehempfang auf das Wahlverhalten in Sachsen untersucht wird. Dabei wird ein „natürliches Experiment“ ausgenutzt. Vor der Wiedervereinigung gab es in Ostdeutschland Regionen mit und Regionen ohne Westfernsehempfang, wobei der Empfang allein von geographischen und topographischen Gegebenheiten bestimmt wurde. Unsere Analyse zeigt, dass in Gemeinden, in denen vor der Wiedervereinigung bereits Westfernsehen empfangbar war, der Stimmenanteil links- und rechtsextremer Parteien unmittelbar nach der Wiedervereinigung signifikant geringer war als in jenen Gemeinden, die keinen Westfernsehempfang hatten. Gleichzeitig war die Wahlbeteiligung in Gemeinden mit Westfernsehempfang höher. Unsere Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass das Westfernsehen dabei geholfen hat, Zustimmung zum politischen System der BRD zu generieren.
