La dinámica de la deserción escolar en el Perú: un enfoque usando modelos de duración

Aún cuando en la década de los noventa en Perú se observó una mejora en matrícula escolar, desempeñándose incluso mejor que sus pares latinoamericanos, las tasas de atraso escolar y deserción persisten impidiendo un incremento sustancial en el nivel educativo de la sociedad. La presente investigación trata de analizar la dinámica de la deserción a lo largo del ciclo escolar y, a su vez, caracterizar a aquellos niños que son más propensos a dejar la escuela. Los resultados arrojan que las restricciones económicas, principalmente en las zonas rurales y en los niños urbanos, y los problemas no económicos, básicamente para las niñas urbanas, son los principales factores que determinan la interrupción de la educación. Asimismo, los resultados de la simulación de un programa de transferencias monetarias inducen a pensar que éste tendría un efecto sobre la deserción, disminuyéndola entre 14% y 36%. Finalmente, si se acompaña dicho programa con políticas de reducción de la entrada tardía al primer año de primaria, la deserción disminuiría entre 50% y 78%.
