The women’s trade-off between work and informal care in Europe
This article focus on the trade-off between work and informal care among women aged 50 to 65. We first specify a simple time allocation model assuming a substitution between the two activities trough the time constraint but also a complementarity trough the agent’s preferences. From the two first-order conditions defining the optimal allocation, we jointly estimate the time devoted to work and care taking into account the simultaneity of the decisions and the censure which characterizes each variable. The model is estimated using data from SHARE, a European multidisciplinary database of micro data on health, socioeconomic status and family network. Our empirical results suggest that time devoted to care appears to reduce the working time. In terms of public policy, encouraging the informal care provision for disabled elderly people may then hamper growth in senior employment.
