Abstract

In this paper, we propose a composite index of child nutrition (CICN) as a single metric to measure and monitor efforts to improve nutritional status of children in the community. The CICN is based on routinely available data on stunting, wasting and underweight in children and does not require multi-dimensional classification of children as is the case with the composite index of anthropometric failure (CIAF). Using the data available from district level data from the National Family Health Survey of India, the CICN is shown to be almost linearly inversely related to CIAF and, therefore, can serve as a single metric for measuring and monitoring the progress towards child nutrition.
