A kinetic theory of urban dynamics

Abstract

The method previously developed (Tomlin, 1969) as a general approachto traffic-distribution problems has been extended and applied to the consideration of urban migration. It depends upon a knowledge of certain transition coefficients which must be expressed in terms of measurable quantities which are taken to be costs and incomes. Within the limits of certain assumptions it is possible, by comparing the equilibrium distributions derived from kinetic theory and from entropy maximisation, to suggest possible forms for the coefficients. These results indicate the kind of statistical data that are needed and how the data should be analysed to give useful expressions for the transition coefficients. Given that this could be done, the kinetic equations then allow the prediction of the consequences of specific policy decisions.
