Abstract

Advances in the information and communication technologies are undeniable but no impact has yet been shown on economic performance measured at an aggregated level. This is the conclusion that can be drawn from an overview of economic research on the subject. In both the US and Europe, performance in terms of growth, inflation, structure or level of employment cannot be explained by the development of information processing. The main reason is that no trace of the diffusion of productivity gains achieved in the sectors producing new technologies has been observed in the sectors using them.
