Abstract

Nuclear weapons are still supposed to be particularly expensive, but they enjoy immense prestige among national security strategists for the firepower that is intended to deter potential enemies of a state. Precise cost information is very difficult to obtain due to the secrecy surrounding this weapon. Also what should be accounted for personnel or upstream research and development, materials necessary for its use in the context of civil infrastructure? Estimates for France, the United Kingdom and the United States can be made from parliamentary documents, which is not the case for the Soviet Union or China. The differences in the estimates are significant. In 1984, if we refer to the USADA, nuclear military expenditure represents 12.5% of world military expenditure, half of which for the Soviet Union alone, while SIPRI places the corresponding expenditure at 8.8%.
