Produktqualität, Marktanteil und Unternehmenserfolg: Ergebnisse der PIMS-Forschung und ihre empirische Relevanz für die westdeutsche Industrie

Abstract

Es besteht kein Zweifel daran, daß die betriebswirtschaftliche Strategieforschung dem PIMS-Projekt wichtige Impulse verdankt. Dies belegen nicht nur Anzahl und Niveau der empirischen Studien, die diesem Projekt entstanden, sondern auch der Umfang der kritischen Diskussion, der von den PIMS-Resultaten hervorgerufen worden ist und zu Fortschritten in der Strategieforschung beigetragen hat. Nur wenigen Forschungsansätzen aus diesem Bereich ist in Wissenschaft und Praxis ein ähnliches Interesse entgegengebracht worden. Aus dem Spektrum der PIMS-Forschung wird im folgenden nur ein kleiner Teil herausgegriffen, der jedoch die für die moderne PIMS-Philosophie maßgeblich ist. Es handelt sich dabei um jene Untersuchungen, die sich dem Kausalzusammenhang zwischen Produktqualität, Marktanteil und Unternehmenserfolg widmen und zugleich den harten Kern des neueren PIMS-Forschungsprogramms bilden. Die grundlegenden Bausteine und die Resultate dieser neueren kausalanalytischen Studien, die alle auf der PIMS-Datenbank beruhen, werden in den Abschnitten 2. und 3.1. dieses Beitrags vorgestellt. Daran anschließend präsentiert der Verfasser seinen Versuch, den Kausalzusammenhang zwischen Produktqualität, Marktanteil und Unternehmenserfolg anhand eines Datensatzes zu reproduzieren, der einer Erhebung in der westdeutschen Industrie entstammt (Abschnitt 3.2.2.). Da sich der von der PIMS-Forschung postulierte Zusammenhang in der westdeutschen Industrie nur schwach andeutet, wird eine Erweiterung des grundlegenden PIMS-Modells vorgeschlagen und überprüft (Abschnitt 3.2.3.). Es zeigt sich, daß dieses erweiterte Modell den Daten besser entspricht als das ursprüngliche PIMS-Modell. Die sich daraus ergebenden Konsequenzen für die Strategieforschung werden ebenfalls verdeutlicht (Abschnitt 4).
