The Cognitive Revolution?

Abstract

Just as the development of relativity theory and quantum mechanics have been the defining events of twentieth-century science, the burgeoning field of cognitive science is often trumpeted as being a glimpse into the future of the center of science in the coming century. In this paper, we examine this claim, asking whether the so-called cognitive ``revolution'' is indeed revolutionary or, on the other hand, is merely a flash-in-the-pan, scientifically speaking. As a point of perspective on this question, the paper looks at the claims and accomplishments of artificial intelligence, as well as the research agenda of workers in the currently fashionable field of artificaila life. the paper concludes with some speculations about what directions the ``cognitive revolution'' is likely to take over the coming decade or two.
