Abstract

The article shows that teenagers´ aspirations for their own education are shaped by a host of factors. Teenagers´ aspirations depend not only on their own personal characteristics and life experiences but also on those coming from people that are related to them. Parents´ schooling, aspirations, and socioeconomic status, as well as those of relatives and family friends and parents´ coworkers, are important factors that shape teenagers´ aspirations. An instrumental variable approach allows to provide evidence on causality from teenagers´ living environment to their educational aspirations.
