Abstract

The report provides an overview of the child work phenomenon in El Salvador – its extent and nature, its determinants, its consequences on health and education, and national responses to it. The report serves two important UCW project objectives in the country. First, it helps provide a common analytical understanding of child work, that can be used to inform the current activities of the three partner agencies and Government, and that can be used to develop joint interagency strategies for future co-operation with the Government in the field of child work. Second, through close involvement of local counterparts in its development, the paper contributes to a broader effort to build national capacity in using data for policy development in the child labour field. The report is the product of a collaborative effort of the National Statistical Institute (DIGESTYC), concerned Government ministries and ILO, UNICEF and the World Bank. The statistical information presented in the report is drawn primarily from a national household survey conducted in 2001 (Enquesta de Hogares de Propositos Multiples (EHPM 2001). The survey is National representative and involved a stratified sample of 11,953 households and a total of 16,253 children in the age group 5-17.
