Abstract

The report gives detailed annual statistics of Nordic migration between Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden for the period 1988-1998. Some data for Iceland and the Faroe Islands are also included. National register data combining information on individual migration events of persons make up the bulk of the data. The report deals extensively with migration rates, returning rates and staying rates. These are then broken down over a number of personal indicators (age, education etc.) and activity indicators (employment, economic sector etc.). Challenges in dealing with different national data sources are discussed in detail. These statistics are of interest because migration between the Nordic countries also implies diffusion of knowledge, either as brain drain or as circulation of knowledge. Increased international labour mobility will increase the importance of understanding these mechanisms. Data on education for migrants are not readily available and this currently hampers a full understanding. These first comprehensive detailed statistics of the flow of human capital between the Nordic countries are the output of a Nordic project which is also dealing with the human capital aspect of job-to-job mobility in the Nordic countries and researcher mobility in particular. The project is jointly undertaken by STEP, The Danish Institute for Studies in Research and Research Policy, Statistics Finland, Statistics Iceland, and Vinnova.
