Niveaux relatifs de productivite multifactorielle au Canada et aux Etats-Unis : une analyse sectorielle

Abstract

L'objectif de cette etude est triple. Pour commencer, nous examinons le niveau de la productivite multifactorielle (PMF) au Canada comparativement aux Etats-Unis pour la periode allant de 1994 a 2003. Puis, nous determinons l'importance relative des differences d'intensite du capital et de PMF en tenant compte des differences de productivite du travail entre les deux pays. Enfin, nous remontons jusqu'au niveau de l'industrie pour etablir les differences de PMF entre le Canada et les Etats-Unis et nous estimons les contributions respectives des secteurs des biens, des services et du genie a l'ecart global de PMF. Nos principales constatations sont les suivantes. Premierement, l'intensite globale du capital est aussi forte au Canada qu'aux Etats-Unis. Cependant, au Canada, l'intensite du capital varie considerablement selon la categorie d'actifs. Le Canada possede nettement moins de machines et de materiel, environ la meme quantite de batiments et beaucoup plus de travaux de genie. Deuxiemement, la plupart des differences de productivite du travail entre le Canada et les Etats-Unis sont imputables aux differences de PMF. Troisiemement, nos resultats par industrie montrent que les niveaux de la productivite du travail et de la PMF dans les secteurs canadiens des biens et du genie sont proches de ceux observes aux Etats-Unis. Par contre, dans le secteur des services, les niveaux de productivite du travail et de PMF sont nettement plus faibles au Canada, situation qui explique la plupart de la difference de niveau global de productivite entre les deux pays.
