Abstract

Dans le système fédéral canadien de sélection des immigrants (qualifiés) appartenant à la catégorie économique, les études postsecondaires sont traitées comme s'il s'agissait d'un élément homogène, toute variation se situant sur le seul plan quantitatif. Toutefois, certaines provinces établissent des distinctions selon le domaine d'études postsecondaires. Ce produit permet d'explorer les conséquences sur le plan économique pour les hommes et les femmes ainsi que pour deux sous-groupes d'immigrants, soit ceux qui ont fait leurs études au Canada et ceux qui les ont faites ailleurs. Le domaine d'études n'est pas observé pour expliquer bon nombre de différences au chapitre des gains entre les immigrants et les personnes nées au Canada, bien qu'il joue un rôle relativement plus important chez les hommes que chez les femmes. Fait intéressant à noter, malgré quelques exceptions, on remarque une tendance générale selon laquelle les différences entre les domaines à rémunération élevée et ceux à rémunération faible ne sont pas aussi grandes chez les immigrants que chez les personnes nées au Canada. De même, les prestations d'assistance sociale varient moins d'un domaine à l'autre pour les immigrants que pour les personnes nées au Canada. Néanmoins, il existe des différences considérables entre les domaines pour chaque groupe d'immigrants.
