Abstract

Le présent document de recherche étudie les changements observés au niveau de la diversification des entreprises et des usines depuis le début des années 70 dans le secteur canadien de la fabrication. Il révèle qu'il y a eu, en général, une augmentation de la spécialisation tant des entreprises que des usines. Les entreprises réduisent continuellement le nombre d'industries à l'intérieur desquelles elles font des affaires, surtout lorsque les industries ne sont pas reliées. On a également observé une spécialisation des produits au niveau des usines; par opposition à la spécialisation sur le plan industriel, la spécialisation des produits est cependant apparue à la fin de la période, au moment, ou à peu près, où l'Accord de libre-échange entre le Canada et les États-Unis a été mis en oeuvre. Le degré de spécialisation des usines a surtout augmenté à l'intérieur de celles qui ont le plus solidement envahi les marchés d'exportation.
