Abstract

Les nuages se sont lentement mais sûrement accumulés dans le ciel conjoncturel britannique au cours des derniers mois. La croissance a fortement ralenti à partir du deuxième trimestre 2004, le PIB n'affichant plus qu'une hausse de 1,5 % en glissement sur un an au deuxième trimestre 2005, contre 3,7 % un an plus tôt, ce qui rapproche la croissance britannique de celle de la zone euro (1,1 %) en l'éloignant de celle des États-Unis (3,6 %). La hausse des taux d'intérêt a freiné l'activité, alors qu'aucun soutien à la croissance n'est venu de l'environnement extérieur. La Banque d'Angleterre a amorcé une baisse de son taux directeur en août, pour le porter à 4,5 % et sera probablement amenée à le baisser encore d'ici la fin de l'année pour soutenir la croissance. L'inflation reste modérée, mais la conduite de la politique monétaire est rendue compliquée par les perspectives d'un prix du pétrole durablement élevé. [Premier paragraphe]
