Abstract

This working paper central purpose is to study the magnitude and the evolution of mortality in the Guadalajara province between 1700 and 1865. The parish registers of baptisms and deaths in a sample of 25 local entities are the main source of data. The principal finding is the slightly downward trend in the gross mortality rate between 1750 and 1830s, only broken by a brisk surge during the first years of the XIX century. The dominant factor in the downward pattern is a pullback in adult mortality.
