Abstract

Grande il merito di chi ha progettato e reso possibile la ristampa, impreziosita con utili note esplicative, dell’importante ma sfortunato saggio “Delle virtù e dei premi” di Giacinto Dragonetti, pubblicato anonimo a Napoli nel 1766 e poi ristampato l’anno successivo a Venezia e nella stessa Napoli, questa volta con l’indicazione dell’autore. Sfortunato, perché, dopo il primo secolo di grandi accoglienze e di sperticati apprezzamenti in tutta Europa, - eccezion fatta per il giudizio negativo e ingeneroso di Pietro Verri che, scrivendo al fratello Alessandro il 29 aprile 1767, giudicava il saggio in questione “una imitazione molto mal riuscita del libro Dei delitti e delle pene” di Cesare Beccaria – il libro di Dragonetti esce virtualmente dalla circolazione, entrando in un cono d’ombra dal quale sta uscendo solo da qualche anno a questa parte. (Viene tradotto in francese nel 1767, in russo nel 1769, in inglese e tedesco nel medesimo anno, in svedese e in spagnolo nel 1771 e in polacco nel 1773).
