This study verifies the existence of a long-term relationship between the composition of exports and economic growth in Brazil, for the period from 1989 to 2005. For this it uses the approach of the theory of economic growth for formulation of a theoretical and econometric model to this relationship, as well as the approach of time series analysis for econometric estimatives. The effect of the composition of exports on economic growth is analyzed in two ways: the technological differentiation and the diversification of exports. The results of the estimates are tested for stationary and cointegration of the series. The results indicate the existence of a long-term relationship of technology products exports and the diversification of exports, with economic growth. In the short term, the results indicate that only the variations of the factors capital / labour and exports of other products per employee, affect the output per worker in the economy. Moreover, it is observed that short-term imbalances in the variable product / employee are corrected almost immediately in the following period. In an international comparison, it is concluded that in countries with higher rates of economic growth, exports of high-tech products have weight in the total exports, relatively higher than presented by Brazil. Thus, it appears the need for targeting of Brazilian exports to products of higher aggregation technology, enabling the achievement of a sustainable economic growth.
