Abstract

The present collection of essays and opinions is devoted to the introduction of the euro in Austria at the beginning of 1999, with particular emphasis on the consequences for consumers. In general, the single currency is expected to lower transaction costs and dampen price developments. However, in production areas with pent-up cost increases suppliers may use the occasion to adjust price levels upwards. The current publication contributes to informing the general public and thereby to securing confidence in the new currency.
