Abstract

In light of the childhood obesity problems affecting Australia and other developed nations, this study investigated parents' attitudes to a school food policy recently introduced into Western Australian government schools. The aim of the study was to develop recommendations for future efforts to implement upstream interventions in school settings. In total, 612 parents of primary and secondary school students responded to an open-ended question about their perceptions of the policy. Around three-quarters of respondents expressed support for the policy, while the remaining responses were neutral or critical. The findings suggest the need for pre-intervention communications that emphasise the role of schools in encouraging healthy eating.
