Abstract

The specific objectives of the study are to: (1) evaluate and compare the prevalence of stunting and wasting among children under 5 years of age in the selected zones; (2) identify socio-economic factors associated with higher or lower rates of malnutrition, with a particular focus on the role played by different types of agricultural production systems; (3) understand how rural health personnel view the malnutrition problem and what they are doing to address it; and (4) investigate the extent to which the local communal governments created as part of Mali’s decentralization process can catalyze and coordinate community actions to reduce childhood malnutrition.
