Abstract

This study examines the relationship between food availability and food access in the context of the rapid post-1979 growth of smallholder maize production in Zimbabwe. It assesses why smallholder maize production increased so rapidly and whether this growth is likely to continue. It examines the distribution of the production gains and explains differential levels of participation. The study also evaluates how much national and household food security in Zimbabwe have improved. Options are reviewed for further improving smallholder food availability and food access.
