Abstract

Mali, in spite of its agricultural potentialities and recent increases in productions, cannot cover its food requirements. Malnourishment, whose main causes are poverty and climatic changes, results in chronic and severe malnutrition of children. For instance, in 2002, 29% of the population was undernourished while in 1995-96, 30% of children 0-35 months old suffered chronic malnutrition and 23% suffered acute malnutrition. To address this problem, in 2002, Malian government adopted a national food security strategy, designed to be consistent with Mali’s decentralization policy. One of the challenges to apply this strategy is the need to develop capacity for food security action planning at the regional, district and commune levels To address this challenge, a project funded by USAID/Mali is being implemented by CSA, APCAM and MSU. The availability of local capacities to manage food security through the capacity development for food security activities planning is one the expected outcomes of this project.
