Abstract

The 2005 – 2006 agricultural campaign has been in general judged satisfactory. From September 2005 to November 2006, the price of coarse grains dropped. But government publicity campaigns aimed at encouraging the local populations to set up and renew family and community grain stocks and cereal banks, and OPAM’s buying for the national food security stocks resulted in stopping the price decline, and higher prices are anticipated. However, in contrast to coarse grains, the price of rice is relatively high due a shortfall in its production at the national level (in part due to difficulties in the supply of fertilizers), and a low level of stocks of rice in the world market. The current prices of coarse grains, the supply of off-season products and a good start of rainfall would lead to price drops or moderations during the hungry season.
