Abstract

E-commerce sales of furniture, lighting, major appliances and furnishings increased more than five-fold over a ten-year period, reaching an estimated value of US$ 11,990 million in 2011. North America was the largest market providing 56% of the total in 2011, followed by Europe with 36% (up from 24% in 2000).In the categories considered the share of e-commerce sales of total sales (at retail prices) increased from 0.3% to 1.1% over the ten-year period. Growth in the e-commerce of furniture and related products is expected to continue in double digits in 2012 and 2013. Last but not least: a final chapter including tips on best practices. Among the monitored sites: Bellacor, Conforama, Cooking.com, Crate&Barrell, Herman Miller, Ikea, MattressUSA, Otto, Thegardengates.com, Wayfair, William-Sonoma.
