Abstract

Sub-Saharan African countries have a strong presence of women in agriculture, but women have limited access to productive agricultural resources. This paper analyzes the potential impacts of a 30% subsidy on women's capital in agriculture in Burkina Faso. It makes use of a computable general equilibrium model. The results indicate that the modernization of agriculture frees the female labor force from agriculture to non-agricultural activities such as agribusiness, catering, and textiles. This leads to a fall in unemployment for women (-0.24%) than for men (-0.16%). In addition, the subsidy policy increases women's income (+ 0.33%) more than men's (+ 0.02%). Finally, the agricultural capital subsidy for women (men) is more effective in terms of reducing gender inequalities (GDP growth) respectively.
