In the paper "Sequencing mixed-model assembly lines to minimize part inventory cost" of Boysen et al. 2007, a mixed-model sequencing approach was proposed, which minimizes in-process inventory of assembly systems supplied from a third-party consignment stock. It was conjectured that the problem is NP-hard, however, no such proof could be provided. In this work, it is shown that general instances of the problem are in fact NP-hard in the strong sense.
