In 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Kygyztan embarked on what has proven to be a tumultuous process of economic, social and political adjustment. As with all of the former republics of the Soviet Union, few could envisage the dramatic implications of change. For Kyrgyztan, this transition has been most difficult. In order to help provide insights and answers to enterprise and employment restructuring in Kyrgyztan, the ILO carried out a survey of manufacturing firms in the country in May-June 1994.
