The paper analyses the productive model of "Free Software Services Companies" (FSSC) which offer open source software services. The paper is based on a survey of the 11 most important French FSSC, carried out between January 2001 and February 2002 and based on semi-directing interviews. We analyse two fundamental issues for these companies: o The sources of their competitive advantage within the software industry, industry controlled by traditional model of IT Services Companies and Software Publishers. o The specific organisation of services production regarding their relationships with communities of developers and the management of their employees.
