Abstract

This paper reviews the state of sexual and reproductive health inseveral countries in Latin America and the Caribbean using the Demographic and Health Surveys to select countries according to their stage in the demographic transition. The results indicate advances in some areas, the most favorable being in countries with low fertility and among higher social classes. However, there are still important challenges, especially in countries whose transition has lagged. The evidence suggests that lack of information and access to reproductive services as well as social and cultural barriers, limits the exercise of a full reproductive life of women in high fertility countries and among underprivileged groups.
