Este documento estudia los efectos conjuntos de desigualdades economicas y politicas en los sistemos redistributivos de impuestos y calidad institucional. El modelo teorico sugiere que la desigualdad aunada con sesgo politico en favor de los ricos decrece la redistribucion y reduce la calidad de las instituciones. El efecto combinado de estos dos mecanismos hace que el impacto en crecimiento sea ambiguo. La evidencia empirica presentada para un panel de paises muestra que la desigualdad tiene un efecto negativo en calidad de instituciones y redistribucion, estoultimo enparticular en paises no democraticos.
