Alternativas para la protección del hábitat y la generación de ingresos en las zonas rurales
Abstract
Una manera de reconciliar la protección del hábitat y el bienestar económico local es promover actividades económicas que sean a la vez lucrativas e inocuas para el medio ambiente. Se ha sugerido que el ecoturismo, la extracción de productos forestales no maderables, la producción ecológicamente racional de madera y la prospección genética podrían atender ambos criterios. El principal interrogante que se ha tratado de contestar en las investigaciones mencionadas en el presente documento es si esas cuatro actividades representan verdaderamente una alternativa económica viable en las tierras interiores ecológicamente vulnerables de América Latina. En cada uno de esos tipos de actividades se analizan varios casos para determinar el nivel y la distribución de las utilidades financieras netas que generan. Se ha dedicado especial atención a examinar el grado en que las poblaciones locales, por oposición a otros agentes económicos, reciben utilidades netas. En general, el examen de las retribuciones que las poblaciones locales pueden esperar derivar del ecoturismo y de la explotación de productos forestales no maderables sugiere que tiene más sentido impartirles educación y capacitación que sea aplicable ampliamente a través de toda la economía que promover otras alternativas.Download Info
