    Abstract

    Este perfil ejecutivo fue comisionado por la Red de Medio Ambiente del Diálogo Regional de Política para la 1a Reunión: Hacia una Gestion Ambiental Eficaz, celebrada los días 4 y 5 de abril, 2002. Este estudio concierne la inserción de la gestión ambiental en las políticas del sector turístico para asegurar que las amenazas sean reconocidas y tratadas. Cuatro características principales del turismo en el Caribe proporcionan el fundamento para este estudio: 1) el turismo es la industria más común en la región; 2) el turismo es la industria de más rápido crecimiento en prácticamente todos los países caribeños; 3) el turismo es también el sector más importante, y algunas veces, el único productivo, en algunas de estas economías; 4) el medio ambiente (ecológico y sociocultural) que explica las primeras tres características anteriores está bajo una seria amenaza en varios de los destinos turísticos caribeños.
