This paper aims at characterizing the dynamics of R&D competition within the pharmaceutical domain. Knowledge dynamics are measured by using patent-based indicators, particularly we rely on the dynamics in forward citations. The basic properties of the learning regimes are investigated looking at rivals’ learning processes and focusing both on failures and successes. We also contribute to the debate about the relevance of citation in measuring patent value by looking at the relationship between patent citations and product sales.
